Winter Fashion Trends for Women

The temperature is dropping, and it’s time to break out the winter wardrobe. When adding new pieces to your closet this season, there are a few trends to keep in mind! This winter is all about texture, timeless pieces, and vintage styles.

Classic 70’s patterns, 40’s inspired structure, and 80’s grunge leather are just a few of the trends making a comeback. 2020 has brought us back to our roots with classic, timeless, and simple looks.

Here are ten trends to keep on hand in your wardrobe this winter:

A classic blazer

A classic staple, the blazer can take your outfit from work to drinks without question. It compliments the most casual attire, as well as the most business-appropriate. While the fitted, tapered blazer is always on-trend, this year has also brought out a boxier style than before.

Whether with a pencil skirt and tasteful flats or with a pair of black leather leggings and stilettos, a black blazer is a must this season. As a busy mom, I need things that can go with multiple different outfits for a quick grab-and-go style.

This timeless piece will be wearable for years to come and is great to keep in your capsule wardrobe year-round.

Black Long line straight fit blazer

A flattering body con dress

Body con dresses are a great piece to have in your closet because they are just so easy and comfortable to wear. Especially when you want to be cute and comfy at home during the pandemic!

They’re great for layering under blazers, denim, or puffer jackets, look adorable with sneakers or heels and can go from the office to dinner or a trip to the store with the family with ease.

The best body con dresses for this winter are the cozy, long-sleeved sweater material kind. Equal parts warmth and style. They’re my go-to for the days I have to leave the office and head straight to dinner or a holiday party. Or you know, to a zoom gathering with friends.

Natural Chevron detail knitted midi dress

A cozy blanket scarf

A blanket scarf is both a way to keep warm and an essential part of your outfit. They can be worn so many different ways, are SO cozy, and can also be worn with casual or dressy outfits.

A few of my favorite ways to wear them are wrapped around the neck or draped over the shoulders like a faux pancho. I love the elegant look of the shoulder drape! It can get rather chilly here in Germany, so wrapping up in a blanket scarf is a great and functional style choice.

Ambre Scarf

Anything leather

One of the biggest fabric trends this year is definitely leather. Leather pants, jackets, skirts, and accessories are all in right now, and I love it. A great leather jacket is a staple in my winter wardrobe, and its timelessness makes them an excellent investment. You know they’ll be in style for years to come!

But it’s not only the jackets this year. The Fall/Winter runway shows also brought lots of cute leather pants. Even in quarantine, it’s nice to get dressed up every now and then!

And if you’re wanting to be eco and animal conscious, PU leather is also hot this winter!

Black Faux leather belted trousers

And anything velvet

Alongside leather, velvet is also on-trend this winter. Velvet brings a warm, vintage vibe to your wardrobe and is an absolute must this winter. Like leather, anything velvet – like pants, jackets, skirts, bags, and more – is in.

My personal favorite is the velvet blazer, combining two of the top trends this season into one. It’s soft, warm, and looks great with a skirt suit or leggings and a tee. I like to try out fun colors, too, like oranges, greens, and purples to add a pop to my outfits.

Velvet Blazer

Chain necklaces

One of the top accessory trends I’m seeing right now is the gold chain necklace. They’re subtle yet statement all at the same time and perfectly compliment my athleisure or businesswear.

You can find them all over Amazon, Etsy, and the rest of the internet. There are even mask chains made in a similar style to help you keep your mask nearby while looking cute.

A French beret

This is one trend I can really get behind! You guys know France has my heart, even though we’re currently living in Germany.

Beret’s are one of the most popular hats this season, and for a good reason. Not only are they warm and practical, but they’re also simplistic yet elegant in a way only French fashion can truly be.

A strong shoulder

Yet another vintage trend making its way back into the mainstream, looks with strong shoulders are huge this winter. Shoulder pads, ruffles, and puffy sleeves can be found on many of the top looks off of the runway.

A strong shoulder adds a sense of class and elegance to a look, portraying power and confidence. I love it because it can add a huge focal point to an otherwise minimalist outfit.

Blue Denim button front top

The classic turtleneck sweater

Not that this trend ever really went away, but the turtleneck is a huge staple this year. It’s a great piece, in general, to keep in your capsule wardrobe because it’s so versatile. They’re great for layering or wearing along, and can be paired with lots of different kinds of bottoms and still look great.

They’re especially trendy worn under a work blazer instead of a traditional collard blouse. You can even pair them with a flannel or teddy coat for a super cozy look. Overall, it’s a piece I’d highly recommend keeping on-hand in your winter wardrobe.

Cashmere Roll Neck Jumper

These are just a few of the many styles and trends that are hot this season. It’s full of minimalistic styles, statement pieces, vintage inspiration, and comfortable yet versatile outfits. After all, it’s 2020, and nothing is quite normal. We aren’t going out as much and want to be comfy at home, but still want to feel dressed up every now and then.

Do you have any of these items in your wardrobe? What’re some of your go-to pieces for winter? I love finding new styles and trends that I may not have known about and being able to piece new and unique looks together!

I hope you found this quick guide to a few winter trends helpful. Until next time, Au revoir!

Great article you have here and thank you for sharing such an informative article. These look like some classic fashion style that i can get for one of my female friends and the good part is that they keep warm too. Except for the cozy blanket scarf that one i can get for myself.

I am all about winter clothes and all but it is so hard for me to find a practical and functional winter clothings. I live in NYC and I have to say that it is freezing right now with a lot of snow, but, I still wanna look cute. Anyway, I love the learher and Velvet look. They are such a classic winter essentials. I definitely have the turtle necks, velvet pants and boots and also leather jackets. Cannot live without them 🙂
