Every morning I ask myself the same question: What am I going to do with my hair today? And every day I end up doing the same thing and pulling my hair back together in a knot. People tell me often how they like my hair and they wish they had curls because they do not know what to do with their straight hair. For me it is just the other way around, I wish I had straight hair. No more wondering what to do with it in the morning without looking like the Jackson 5.
The problem with curly hair is that you must do something, you cannot leave the house without styling it. But washing it every day is not an option either, this does not do any good to your hair. It is what I did when I was younger, I washed it every day, but first of all it takes too much time in the morning, and second it damages your hair.
Curly hair has lots of advantages too. When you have a bad hair day, you will know it, but others do not see it. It actually always looks stylish naturally. Also, when you are getting older, curls hide the Grey hairs. And when you dye your hair, the curls make sure that you do not see the outgrowth very clearly. There are numerous styling tips for curly hair, but before styling them, it is important to know what kind of curly hair you have.
Curls or curls?
There are curls and then there are curls! We can divide them into 3 main types:
First there are the wavy curls, which are between the straight hair and the curly hair. Usually it is more straight on top and gets wavier down the end.
The curly curls are all over your hair, from top to bottom. They have a clear S-shape. When it is raining or humid outside, they tend to frizz easily. They need an intense caring for, or the curls will become damaged and dull.
The kinky curls have a clear Z-shape. The hair is quite thin and needs intensive caring as well. This hair type is very dry and fragile and needs a gentle touch.
The Shape of Your Face
Before getting into the different styling tips for curly hair, let’s have a look at t. Some hairstyles go better with a round face, other with a long shaped face.
- If you have a round face, you would want to have a hairstyle that makes your face look longer, like long hair or like a knot on top of your head.
- If you have a large forehead, you would want to think of a fringe to draw away the attention of it.
- If you have a long face, a short layered hairstyle would give it some more volume
- If you have a square face, a layered hair style will ease the sharp edges off your face
- If you have an oval face, you can do whatever you want, all hairstyles look great on this one
Give your curly hair a mask at least once a week. Curly hair usually is fragile and very dry and needs extra caring than straight hair. I can recommend coconut based products, this is a sure value for any kind of curls. Sometimes I put a hair mask on my dry curls and tie my hair in a knot overnight, this nourishes them deeply and the curls look healthy and shiny the next day.
It might sound crazy, but sometimes it will do your hair good to forget about your shampoo. Washing your hair one time a week is enough. Try replace your washing by this homemade solution: mix warm water with baking soda. You can put this in a spray and spray it on your hair for shiny, well-curled curls.
Dry your hair in a towel overnight. Even better would be to tie a silk scarf around your hair. By keeping your hair confined, your curls will stick together and do not fall apart looking lifeless.Volume assured!
We all know that you do not just run a brush through your curly hair and especially when your hair is dry. Curly hair needs gentle care and preferably with a wide-toothed comb and when your hair is wet.
Double prong clips:
With curls the hair texture and shape of the curls is not the same for every lock of hair. Turn locks of your wet hair around double prong clips and let them dry like that. Your curls will be well shaped curls and gain in volume.
Mix some of your conditioner with a bit of water in your hands and run that through and reform your curls. They will look shiny and healthy and will be well shaped. The ends will be moisturized and look fuller.
Clip up when sleeping:
When sleeping sometimes we move a lot when dreaming and we turn around, our hair gets messed up on the pillowcase and the result is that the next morning it looks like a birds nest. Therefore, you could clip up your hair when going to bed. Choose a silicon wide-toothed clip that does not irritate your scalp when sleeping.
Instead of making your hair completely wet in the shower, clip it up and do not put your hair under the water stream. The heat of the shower humidifies your hair anyway and this is good enough to revive your curls in the morning. Something that has the same effect on your hair is a water spray bottle. Make sure it sprays a fine mist of water. Spray some of it on your hair and reform your curls back into shape.
Hold them curls:
If your hair needs a little help to hold the curls throughout the day, you can use a cream or gel. I personally love Shea butter or coconut cream for my hair, although the last one strongly smells of coconut, so you should enjoy the perfume of this.
Blow drying your curly hair is only making them dryer. So when you have tried all other option to
make your curls look beautiful, and nothing else is helping, then opt for a Diffuser. After washing your hair, untangle it and put your favorite hair styling mousse in your wet hair. Put your head down
forwards and after kneading curls with one hand, hold the Diffuser on them with the other hand.
There are many ways to revive your curls on the second, third or fourth day after washing them. Important is to find out what kind of curls you have and what caring products work best for you to keep your curls beautiful every day without washing them too often.
