All right, so the world has been dealing with this global pandemic for most of 2020. I’ll be honest, like most of you, this was definitely not how I saw 2020 panning out when I clinked my champagne glass on New Year’s Eve. However, life doesn’t always go as planned and this is a perfect example of that. We must adapt and find new ways of doing old things.
My family and I have been following the rules and practicing social distancing as well as self-isolating for about five weeks now. And although we are fortunate to have everything at our disposal to be able to work, study and entertain ourselves at home, it has still been a struggle at times.
The kids, even without trying, often make concentrating on work very distracting. Adding to that, I’ve been wracked with mom guilt about helping them keep up with their studies. And don’t forget that somehow, I’ve been roped into making three meals a day, plus snacks for everyone who lives here! Let’s not even mention how the laundry piles up all the time. How does that even happen when everyone is home in their pajamas all the time?
But in all seriousness, despite all of this, I really don’t have anything to complain about. After all, I’m safe at home with the people I love the most and we are all healthy. I sincerely hope you are too.
However, it goes without saying that we are getting on each other’s nerves here and there. Close quarters and the sedentary lifestyle that comes from always being at home is mostly to blame. Yes, we have taken bike rides and gone for walks as a family, but these things are just not keeping me as active as I would like. Possibly because I find myself with more opportunities than ever before, to take a walk to the fridge multiple times per day!
I do miss being physically active and I have been looking something stimulating to help me take charge of my fitness goals. In my city, like everywhere around the globe, gyms are closed and this means that my options are limited to home based workouts.
Over the first couple of weeks, I just didn’t work out at all but it didn’t take long for me to realize how much I needed it. So, off I went to find an at-home option that would be both mentally fulfilling and physically beneficial.
And of course, once I found it and tested it out, I was eager to share it with you! So welcome to my latest fitness find, Aaptiv! If you’ve been searching for that elusive “me” time and you too feel the need to get off the couch and get yourself moving again, this might be the answer for you’ve been looking for.
Personally, I was looking for a calorie-burning workout but I also wanted to have options for strength training as well. I find that my body does best when I have a mix of the two. I do have an elliptical at home but I also enjoy stretching and yoga.
I wasn’t really set on a particular workout, just something that had options. When it comes down to it, eventually this health crisis will end and we will all be able to get back to our lives. When that happens, do we really want to crawl out of our homes, overweight and miserable?
As easy as it would be to go down that road, I know that’s not what I want for myself. I would much rather emerge from quarantine in shape and ready for summer! Or fall…but let’s hope it will be summer! So on to my Aaptiv quarantine workout plan!

Honestly, this was one of the reasons that I was drawn to Aaptiv in the first place. Having so many different options is a great thing. If you haven’t worked out in a while, then your goals will reflect that. Same goes if you are training for a marathon. And Aaptiv has options for both and everything in between.
Aaptiv Cardio and Strength Training
One of the ways you can design the app to meet your own goals is by answering their very first question. The Aaptiv app will prompt you for answers to questions such as; Do you want to lose weight? Run a race? Build strength? After that, the app will show you the type of workouts that best fit your goals.
After your goals, come the categories. Aaptiv will again offer suggestions for you but you can also browse the categories and find what you like. Then you get to choose a workout that is based on things such as duration, trainer, and even the music that you like!
What type of categories do they offer? Great question! You can choose between running & walking, elliptical, stair climber, strength training, indoor cycling, treadmill, stretching, yoga and the best workout for your mind…meditation! So many of these options fit my own preferences and it even introduced me to some new ones that I wouldn’t have otherwise tried.
Another thing that is fun about Aaptiv and what makes it different that other fitness apps, is that it is audio based. Audio? I know…I asked myself the same question. But it works! Other fitness guides require you to watch a video in order to follow along but Aaptiv is completely audio-based and it’s done for a reason.
Aaptiv trainers actually guide you through your workout without you ever needing to be glued to your screen. I found this to be super helpful as constantly looking at my phone would have been awkward as I tried to move correctly through the workout. Also, I was able to enjoy the music and really get into my workout.
Plus, there’s the motivation factor! Just as if the trainer was running alongside you, or calling out movements at the front of a class, Aaptiv trainers are right there, in your ear. Sometimes, it can be overwhelming to have them yelling and screaming at you to go faster and harder but honestly, I found it to be quite motivating. Left to my own devices, I have in the past, often slowed down or (and I’m embarrassed to admit this but…) sometimes, I’ve even quit when things got difficult.
However, with the Aaptiv trainer calling out instructions and personal motivations, I was able to focus on my workout and keep going until the end. The audio-based factor is a huge reason why this worked for me. I just wouldn’t have been able to keep my focus if I had to have my eyes glued to the screen. The trainers basically drown out that voice in your head that tells you you’ve done enough and it’s time for a latte. Yes…you know that voice too!
Thinking long term as well, Aaptiv will be great once the Covid-19 health crisis is over. Although this was originally meant as a quarantine solution, there’s a good chance that I will continue to use Aaptiv when all this is said and done.
I can continue to use the app at the gym, if I feel so inclined or at home and even on-the-go. When traveling for work comes back into the picture, it will be easy to stay on track with Aaptiv.
With over 2500 guided workouts and programs to choose from, I honestly feel as if I have hired my own personal group of trainers. I also enjoy being able to save to “My Favorites” all of the workouts and trainers that I like the most. That way I don’t have to go back in and search and scroll through hundreds of options every time I want to work out. I simply pop into My Favorites and easily find what I want.

Now of course, I’m always hesitant to commit to something new. Especially when it comes to workouts and fitness regimes! I for one, just never know which ones I will end up sticking to and which ones I will abandon after a few weeks or months. As my husband could tell you, I have been known to purchase gyms memberships that I don’t use and buy fitness equipment that spends more time drying my laundry than working out my muscles.

Another bonus is Aaptiv’s affordable pricing. Now, I am fortunate to be able to continue working throughout this period of self-isolation. My career is one that for the most part can continue on as long as I have my laptop and Wi-Fi. But not everyone is that lucky. Many people have been temporarily laid-off and household expenses are tight. If that is your situation, then know that I am thinking of you and hope that you can get back to work as soon as is possibly safe to do so.
