Like an old proverb will say goals are one of those things that keeps you going and alive we must make sure we strive and fight for anything we can actually aim for. The question remains how can we get this done?
I can tell you that most people spend their entirely life looking for an answer to that but there are a few people that have made it big by using the best principle you can use to achieve your goal, what do you think I mean by that? I use the SMART method.
To help you better understand this I am going to be explaining the power of setting a SMART GOAL and living a balanced life. Setting a SMART goal has helped me to manage my family as a good mum to my kids, a wonderful wife to my husband, a full-time worker and a blogger.
Being a hardworking woman, and energetic hot lady is what I really aspired to be and doing the right thing at the right time is a standard that has worked for me and should work for everyone out there.
Many feel like they are adrift in the world. They work hard, but they do not seem to get close to where they desire to be.
One of the main reasons why they feel so is that they did not spend enough time thinking about what they want out of life and they did not set any formal goals. After all, would you make a great trip without having the idea of where you are going? Probably not!
Anyone who wants to follow the goal knows that it is important to describe his purpose. Empty slogans do not give satisfactory results. A pre-made concrete analysis will help you get to the finishing line. A useful way to do this is what is known as SMART goals. Definition / acronym of SMART objectives means “specific, measurable, acceptable, realistic and time-limited”.
The intelligent target shows the direction you want to take to achieve your goals. In this way, a well-formulated goal is easy to understand for everyone.
How do I set a goal
First, I consider what I want to achieve, then I think about the way to achieve it. I set SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-limited) that motivate me so I write them out to make them feel tangible. Then I plan the steps I need to take to achieve my goal and work through them.
Setting goals is a powerful process of thinking about the ideal future and motivating you to transform your vision and the future into reality.
The goal setting process helps you choose life destiny. By knowing exactly what you want to achieve, you know where you need to focus your efforts. You will also quickly notice disturbances that can easily lead you.
How Do You Include Your Children In Goal Setting
Including your children in discussions about how to set goals and the importance of this is a good practice for them. Age is not a limit as children want to be involved in conversations, They want to hear and love to know more about life as they get exposed and are able to set their own goals. They are more likely to cooperate with whatever restrictions that have been established to achieve the goal.
SMART goals are:
Specific: well-defined, clear and unambiguous.
Measurable: with specific criteria that measure your progress in achieving your goal.
Achievable: attainable and possible to achieve.
Realistic: Within your power, realistic and tailored to your purpose in life.
Timely: With a clearly defined timeline, which includes a start date and an objective date.
Thе goal muѕt сlеаrlу dеfinе whаt iѕ to be асhiеvеd, bу whоm, whеrе аnd when it iѕ tо bе achieved. Sоmеtimеѕ it may еvеn state whу thаt gоаl iѕ еѕѕеntiаl. Nоt all of thеѕе ԛuеѕtiоnѕ will apply to еvеrу gоаl уоu аrе ѕеtting, but it iѕ important tо ask аll the ԛuеѕtiоnѕ in оrdеr tо assess how ѕресifiс уоur goal iѕ аnd mаkе it as сlеаr and соnсiѕе as possible.
When ѕеtting a goal, bе ѕресifiс аbоut what you wаnt to ассоmрliѕh. Think аbоut thiѕ as thе mission ѕtаtеmеnt fоr уоur goal. Thiѕ iѕn’t a dеtаilеd liѕt оf how уоu’rе gоing to mееt a gоаl, but it ѕhоuld include аn аnѕwеr tо the рорulаr ‘w’ questions:
Whо – Consider who nееdѕ tо bе involved tо асhiеvе thе goal (this iѕ especially important whеn you’re wоrking оn a group рrоjесt).
Whаt – Think dеер аbоut еxасtlу what you аrе trуing tо ассоmрliѕh аnd don’t bе аfrаid to gеt very dеtаilеd.
Whеn – Get more specific аbоut thiѕ ԛuеѕtiоn undеr thе “timе-bоund” section оf defining S.M.A.R.T. gоаlѕ, but уоu ѕhоuld at least set a time frаmе tо асhiеvе it.
Whеrе – This question may nоt always аррlу, еѕресiаllу if уоu’rе setting реrѕоnаl gоаlѕ, but if there’s a lосаtiоn оr rеlеvаnt еvеnt, idеntifу it hеrе.
Whiсh – Dеtеrminе аnу rеlаtеd obstacles or requirements. Thiѕ question can bе bеnеfiсiаl in deciding if уоur gоаl is rеаliѕtiс.
Why – Whаt iѕ thе rеаѕоn fоr the gоаl? Anѕwеr will likеlу bе аlоng thе linеѕ оf advancement оr career dеvеlорmеnt.
Measurability аррliеѕ to both the еnd rеѕult аnd thе milestones аlоng the way to attaining a gоаl as it dеvеlорs concrete criteria for measuring рrоgrеѕѕ towards thе аttаinmеnt оf each gоаl уоu set. Whеn уоu measure your рrоgrеѕѕ, уоu ѕtау оn trасk, rеасh out with уоur target dates, and еxреriеnсе the еxhilаrаtiоn of асhiеvеmеnt thаt ѕрurѕ уоu on tо соntinuеd еffоrt rеԛuirеd to rеасh уоur goal.
Tо dеtеrminе if your goal is mеаѕurаblе, аѕk ԛuеѕtiоnѕ ѕuсh аѕ……Hоw much? Hоw mаnу? Hоw will I knоw whеn it is accomplished? along the way thаt will tеll уоu thаt уоu are on the right trасk tо achieving уоur gоаl.
Whаt metrics are you gоing to uѕе tо determine if you mееt thе goal? Thiѕ mаkеѕ a gоаl mоrе tаngiblе bесаuѕе it provides a way tо measure рrоgrеѕѕ. Milеѕtоnеѕ аrе a ѕеriеѕ оf steps аlоng thе way thаt whеn added uр will rеѕult in thе соmрlеtiоn оf уоur mаin gоаl.
As the “M” in SMART ѕtаtеѕ, there should bе a ѕоurсе оf infоrmаtiоn tо mеаѕurе or determine whether a gоаl has bееn achieved.
• Thе M ѕtаnd аѕ a dirесt or indirесt indicator of whаt thе ѕuссеѕѕ fоr a раrtiсulаr goal will lооk likе.
• Sometimes measurement iѕ diffiсult аnd thаt is why wе will nееd to work hаrd tо identify thе most rеlеvаnt аnd feasible methods tо fоllоw.
• Even if a реrfесt, direct measurement method is nоt immediately feasible fоr a givеn goal, the discussion аbоut thе dеѕirеd еnd result is a valuable раrt of реrfоrmаnсе рlаnning.
• Measurement methods саn be bоth ԛuаntitаtivе аnd qualitative pеrfоrmаnсе
When you identify goals that are most important to you, you begin to figure out ways you can make them come true. You develop the attitudes, abilities, and skills or may require developing new skills and changing attitudes to reach them. You begin seeing previously overlooked opportunities to bring yourself closer to the achievement of your goals. I need you to know that you can attain any goal you set when you plan your steps wisely and establish a time frame that allows you to carry out those steps.
Goals that may have seemed far away and out of reach eventually move closer and become attainable, not because your goals shrink, but because you grow and expand to match them. When you list your goals you build your self-image. You develop the traits and personality that allow you to possess them. A goal is meant to inspire motivation, not discouragement.
Firstly, you must believe that you can manage to do what you are setting out to do. If you set goals that are unbelievable even to yourself it is very unlikely you will achieve them.
Secondly, the goals must be possible, all things being equal. There is no point setting a goal to float in the air and defy gravity using only your mind, for instance. No matter how hard you try this won’t be achievable.
Mostly these are the 3 basic things I think about to know if my goals are attainable
- How to accomplish the goal,
- Do you have the tools/skills needed,
- f not, consider what it would take to attain them.
Your goals must be relevant to what you want to achieve in the short term and the long term. Understanding your organizational or personal vision, mission and purpose is critical in this respect. Sometimes I can be tempted to do something simply because it is easy and sounds great, only to discover later on that is has no long term importance to what I want to achieve. Do those things that are most important and in line with your long term vision and mission
But be sure that every goal represents substantial progress. A high goal is frequently easier to reach than a low one because a low goal exerts low motivational force. Some of the hardest jobs you ever accomplished actually seem easy simply because they were a labor of love.
Your goal is probably realistic if you truly believe that it can be accomplished. Additional ways to know if your goal is realistic is to determine if you have accomplished anything similar in the past or ask yourself what conditions would have to exist to accomplish this goal.
A goal should be grounded within a time frame. With no time frame tied to it there’s no sense of urgency and it will drag you down from achieving your set goal. Anyone can set goals, but if it lacks realistic timing, chances are you’re not going to succeed.
Providing a target date for deliverables is imperative. Ask specific questions about the goal deadline and what can be accomplished within that time period. If the goal will take three months to complete, it’s useful to define what should be achieved half-way through the process. Providing time constraints also creates a sense of urgency.
This sometimes overlaps with the goal being Specific, but it aims to ensure that you put a time-frame to your goals. A goal is a dream with a time-frame to it and “Failing to plan is planning to fail” If you find yourself unable to set a SMART goal it is more than likely that your future plans are not clear enough and need to be worked on.
Furthermore, do not get tempted to skip the process of SMART goal setting and “get on with it” without fully analyzing your goals. Doing this careful planning at the beginning will save you lots of time and disappointment at a later stage and you will avoid making costly mistakes.
Ask yourself the following few questions:
- Does my goal have a deadline?
- By when do you want to achieve your goal?
5 Steps to Setting SMART Goals:
Goal setting is more than simply scribbling down some ideas on a piece of paper. Our goals need to be complete and focused, much like a road map. If you follow the 5 goal setting steps outlined below you will be well on your way to becoming an expert in building the road maps to your goals.
- Make sure the goal you are working for is something you really want, not just something that sounds good. When setting goals it is very important to remember that your goals must be consistent with your values.
- Develop goals in all areas of life: Family, Home, Athletics, Financial, Career, Social, Mental, Ethical, etc. Setting goals in each area of life will ensure a more balanced life as you begin to examine and change the fundamentals of everyday living
- Write your goal out in complete detail, the more information you give it, the more clear the final outcome becomes. The more precise the outcome, the more efficient the subconscious mind can become.
- By all means, make sure your goal is high enough. Shoot for the moon, if you miss you’ll still be in the stars. If you’re never able make it, everything you do to reach your goal will make you better at what you are trying to achieve and a better person. Shoot for the moon!
- This is the most important, write down your goals. Writing down your goals creates the road map to your success. Although just the act of writing them down can set the process in motion, it is also extremely important to review your goals frequently. Remember, the more focused you are on your goals the more likely you are to accomplish them.
Sometimes we realize we have to revise a goal as circumstances and other goals change. If you need to change a goal do not consider it a failure, consider it a victory as you had the insight to realize something was different.
So your goals are written down. Every time you make a decision during the day, ask yourself this question, “Does it take me closer to, or further from my goal.” If the answer is “closer to,” then you’ve made the right decision. If the answer is “further from,” well, you know what to do.
How do you go about setting your goals? Did your method work? I would love to hear about your successes and challenges, so please share your thoughts.
