Your metabolism is the process of your body converting what you eat and what you drink into energy.
Even for sleeping, breathing, growing cells for example, your body needs energy. The number of calories your body uses to carry out all these things, is called your metabolism, or metabolic rate.
The way your metabolism works, is partly inherited, but mainly depends on height, weight, age and gender. Then there is also the level of physical activity as well as the digestion that play a role in the way your metabolism works.
The faster your metabolism runs, the more calories you burn and the easier you lose weight. If your metabolism is slower, you will lose weight less fast. It doesn’t mean that you can’t lose weight at all though. There are ways to boost your metabolism and lose weight
#1 Get enough sleep
You have heard about this a hundred of times before, but getting enough sleep is crucial. Everyone has a
different standard for enough, some people only need 6 hours of sleep, others walk around like mummies if they had less than 8 hours (I’m one of them)
Not getting enough sleep, also means that your urge for snacks increases, which is probably not what you would want either.
#2 Don’t skip breakfast
We can say it over and over again, your breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Keep this in mind and don’t skip this meal. Your metabolism only starts working in the morning when you have eaten something. The heartier your breakfast is, the better. Try overnight oats or an omelet and you will have enough energy until lunch. When you cannot eat anything in the early morning, take at least a cup of coffee, tea with some fruit or a yogurt and take some breakfast with you to work or for in the car. Your metabolism will work a lot better during the rest of the day if you’ve had your breakfast.
#3 Eat proteins at every meal
First of all, proteins fill! They can increase your metabolic rate up to 30%, which is far ore than carbs and fats. Meat, fish, eggs, legumes, dairy, nuts and seeds could help increase your metabolism for a few hours. Proteins will help build and maintain muscles and is good for your bones.
#4 Drink water
Another thing we all know is very important. But even though we know we should, we still don’t drink enough water. When you drink 2 liters of water per day, your metabolism will improve considerably, especially when the water is quite cold. Your body needs to warm up the water which burns a couple of calories as well.
#5 Move it
A sitting job is not always easy. It is much better for you to stand, walk or move. Try to find moments to be in action, like during a phone call or go for a walk when having a discussion with a colleague. You should make a small tour at least for 5 minutes every hour. Even these small efforts will increase your metabolism.
#6 Don’t diet
Every time you do a (crash) diet, it completely messes up your metabolism. After these so called diets, you gain back all the weight you lost, even though you are probably eating too few calories. Your body needs a routine in order to function correctly and to have a good metabolism.
#7 Drink green tea
How much you may like the latte macchiato’s and the cappuccino’s, they have plenty of calories in them and your body also takes a while to digest them. Give green tea a try, you can drink as much as you like and you may want to change from water.
#8 Reinvent your work-out
Reinvent your work out exercises, keep challenging yourself. If you do the same exercises over and over again, your body will get used to them and your work out will become less efficient. You could try HIIT (high intensive interval training) or fitness. By putting more focus on training your muscles, you will accelerate your metabolism.
